Storage and access
Collection storage / preservation of masters	Were are the collection masters stored? (if applicable) Include details of the media, number of copies, backup, preservation system, etc Digital content at NLW is stored in 2 main ways: 1. Digital Archive - server and tape library. Archival copy of the material in Vital; other digital materials collected and copied from original media. 2. Vital, proprietary DAMS system, based on Fedora. Digital material also stored at NLW on variety of handheld media (CD, USB, floppy etc) as parts of various collections, and are awaiting processing. 1. Digital Archive Solaris10 and ZFS System (continuous checksum. Self-fixing) A file storage system developed since 2003 Stores archival copies of digital files held by the Library Does not deliver any material for public access Naming conventions = file name and bib ID Multiple copies stored at multiple locations (tape backup at Aberystwyth University) No metadata managed by the Digital Archive Digital Archive regularly/continuously performs checksums on the material and therefore the files are protected from bit rot. Internal access control/rights – staff access to this material can be controlled Digital Archive software can produce usage stats, to see what is accessed looked at by staff 2. Vital VTLS Vital is a proprietary digital asset management system (DAMS) that is based on Fedora - an open source system. Vital stores technical, preservation and administrative metadata for digital files (stored as objects) Currently the access copies are stored on the Vital server but in principle they could be stored anywhere Vital references the archival copy stored in the Digital Archive
Collection access	Where is access to the collection provided from? (if applicable) Vital: Currently the access copies are stored on the Vital server. Discovered through Virtua (catalogue) / Aquabrowser and individual project pages/sites. Digital Archive: Internal access control/rights – staff access to this material can be controlled; provided through link to server. Copy of material in digital archive also supplied on external disk/USB for processing/appraising. (Limited access to collections in the Digital Archive have been provided for external collaborative project discussions/research)
