Digital Video
Digital video is easy to make but expensive to keep.

Detailed description

Digital video has huge resource requirements. Digital video formats are complex. Digital video formats are a moving target.

Very rough ballpark example from car museum film library

Storage

10 minute ish film digitised as per Rec. 709 (uncompressed 1080p)

150G per film

15000 films

2,250,000G

2200T

2 petabyte for 15000 10 minute files at 1080p

3 copies

6 petabyte

1 petabyte $56695 (backblaze.com)

$340170

£400000 for 6 petabytes of storage

Is also ongoing cost for

+ building/s

+ power

+ staff

Digitisation Time

time to telecine = 6 months at x4 speed

this is approx 2.5 minutes per film

time only for basic catalog info (and if can telecine faster cataloging creates a limit to how fast you can do things)

Estimate 1-2 years to digitse 15000 films

issues and observations

disk failure and bit rot is ongoing at this scale of storage but huge storage systems are built with this in mind

cost - big data centre resource required

benefit - you have a huge storage resource

cost to source material of doing telecine

benefit of visibility

on site / off site ?

peer with other organisations

Action

talk to internal team

talk to clients

do small scale proof of concept pilot
