Title
File Format Identification and Metadata Extraction using FITS

Detailed description
Practicioners who are new to Digital Preservation are often looking for ways to identify file format types in their collections and extract metadata from these files. The best way to get started is to use Harvard FITS (File Information Tool Set). This tool is able to identify file formats and extract metadata using defacto Digital Preservation tool such as DROID, JHOVE and EXIFTOOL.

Learned the newcomers how to use FITS. Next to that we loaded the result data into C3PO to make the FITS data visible and provided a visual report generated by C3PO. Also created an Microsoft Excel XLS file from each collection to enable easy analysis of the metadata and file format types.
