University of Southampton Elevator Pitch

To a person in the University with influence (and a social sciences background):

Hi, I’m Claire Norman. As archivist, I play an important role in ensuring the preservation of and access to archival records, both digital and paper, which are widely used for the university’s research.

Increasingly we are receiving digital records. These offer a unique resource and feed a key service for research by our students and academic researchers. We unlock new opportunities for research, which is at the forefront, often collaborative, and multidisciplinary.

This newer way of providing research resources means that we have to start preserving our digital archives. Digital preservation ensures that we continue to have relevant resources, which will not survive unless we actively preserve them. It also facilitates the widening of the service to reach more students.

I am able to make progress towards digital preservation but I am constantly needed for the everyday running of the archives. A dedicated digital preservation officer would enable us to make this happen, and fast. Are you able to lend your support to this?
